MY PASSION FOR FASHION, THE ARTS, LIFESTYLE & SOCIAL HISTORY ....

Ever since arriving in London in 2004, my passion for the History of Fashion, Art & Lifestyle has deepened, and subsequently over time I have created enormous visual & note-filled scrapbooks, covering the ever evolving tastes & styles of each Decade through each Century ( See top photo : for the front inside cover of one of my many scrapbooks ).

On most weekends and at every other free moment that I have, I look at what Exhibitions & Events are on in this great City and it's surrounds; and armed with my camera and sketch-book, I try to get to see as many of them as is possible. London's superb Museums & Art Galleries attract a merry-go-round of top-quality Exhibitions, all of which is food for my creative soul ( not to mention great resource for my Design Studio library ! ).

One of my other passions is to also visit Stately Homes, Palaces, Castles and their Gardens in which ever European Country I may be travelling; not only to see their magnificent interiors filled with Centuries-old artworks, furnishings and ornaments, but to also understand the Social History of these great places, each with it's own unique Royal & Aristocratic Heritage ...

Ah ! They're both my obsession and my creativity's oxygen ! Neatly piled high on every available surface in my home and Design Studio; with many, many more stored away in enormous air-tight metal trunks in safe storage, awaiting to one day take their place on the shelves of my " Dream Library ".

For some - their fix is shoes, for others it's kitchen utensils, but for me however - it's books ! books ! and more books ! Where better to be living with this obsession than in London - a City with some of the best Bookshops and Second-hand Book markets in the World. My other hunting grounds are in Paris and in New York; and let's not even start to talk about the wonderful temptations that await at Amazon.com and e-Bay !

My justification for this book obsession - " If Karl Lagerfeld deems it necessary to have hundreds of thousands of books at hand in his own libraries as invaluable creative resource, then surely as a Designer I need to aspire to do the same ? "

Even in our ' Technology-Age ', where almost everything you wish to read and learn is available at the click of a button; there's something still very wonderfully special about getting lost within your own imagination through the pages of a book - Books become your very best, treasured and most reliable friends.

My Epitaph will surely one day read - ' HE MAY HAVE DIED PENNILESS BECAUSE OF HIS BOOK OBSESSION, BUT AT LEAST HE HAD A GREAT COLLECTION ! ' ( It's more probable that I'll die buried beneath an avalanche of my treasured books !! ).

" Will there ever be another ? " was the question I asked myself, as I stood amongst the exquisitely beautiful creations at the ' VALENTINO - THEMES & VARIATIONS ' Exhibit, at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris last July (' 08 ). The sheer luxury, opulence, elegance and pure magnificence of his designs were for me, intoxicating and overwhelming to say the least !

I first became aware of who Valentino was, back in 1985. The prized interview article I had so carefully treasured from a South African Fashion magazine, now takes pride of place preserved in a plastic sleeve at the front of my ' VALENTINO ' file; where throughout the past years I have collected many more articles on his brilliant work and luxurious lifestyle.

In my own mind, I have built a shrine to him; and worship his design philosophy and elegant lifestyle aesthetics ........

THANK YOU VALENTINO FOR BRINGING SO MUCH BEAUTY INTO THE WORLD !
